Why can't I read documents in a folder back-to-back?

Let's say you created a folder called [Chapter 1] and put a document called [Episode 1] [Episode 2] [Episode 3] in it.

I would like to be able to multi-select all the documents in the [Chapter 1] folder and calculate the total number of characters in [Episode 1] [Episode 2] [Episode 3], or read them in a row without having to click [Episode 1] [Episode 2] [Episode 3] separately.

I would love to have such a feature, thank you.
